^a The 1968 Australian Open (final: Bowrey d. Gisbert 75 26 97 64) was still an amateur tournament. The first slam or the Open Era was Roland-Garros 1968.
^b The Australian Open was held in December from 1977 through 1985, returning to its original January date in 1987. This led to 2 tournaments being played in 1977 (the first one in January, the second one in December) and none in 1986 because of the return to January. During this period, the Masters was held in the beginning of the following year (for editions from 1977 to 1985).
^c ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) rankings started in August 1973.
^d Until 1989, there were two separate tours: the Grand Prix and the WCT (World Championship Tennis). Each of them had its own ranking system, and the ATP rankings didn't take into account all the tournaments either, the most notable example being the Masters. Consequently, for several seasons there is some controversy about the year-end top players. In 1990, everything was finally unified with the creation of the ATP Tour.
^e "Masters" refers to the event which has been known as "The Masters Grand Prix" (1970-1989), "ATP Tour World Championship" (1990-1999), "Tennis Masters Cup" (2000-2008), and "ATP World Tennis Finals" (2009-present). In the past, this event has also competed with other (now extinct) season-ending championships that don't appear in this table: the WCT Finals (1971-1989) and the Grand Slam Cup (1990-1999).
^f The two first editions of the Masters (1970 & 1971) were played under a strict RR (Round Robin) format with a unique group including all the players who qualified for the event. There was no real final, the winner being determined by the best overall record.
^g At the 1975 Masters, Nastase was defaulted in his first RR match (Ashe d. Nastase 16 75 41 def.) but still managed to win the tournament! Such a situation couldn't happen today as he would be automatically defaulted from the rest of the tournament according to the current rules.
